Freak Shows in MMA

MMA Freak Shows

Most hardcore MMA fans know who Roy Nelson is. He is the obese heavy weight who can go toe-to-toe with some of the biggest and baddest MMA fighters in the world. He has even beaten Frank Mir in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu match. Roy Nelson may not know the meaning of a medium or small pizza when it comes to ordering, but, he can deliver a strong punch, ask Stefan Struve, an MMA freak show in his own right (being like 6ft and 11in tall). At least these two were serious fighters and not like Bob Sapp or Choi Hong-man, who're literally freak shows with little skill but all freakishly large.

Probably the biggest mma freak was James Toney, an older pro boxer who turned himself into an MMA fighter or could it have been Kimbo Slice, a street brawler who managed to make it on the Ultimate Fighter, only to lose to a legit fighter and freak Roy Nelson.

I guess my biggest beef is with freaks, is when they bring them on to fight but they are not very skilled combatants. I look to Randy Couture (who is a freak in his own right and still fighting at 47 in the UFC as of this writing) when he fought James Toney as my example, which ended for James in the first round with a novice take down and then an arm triangle choke by Randy. James Toney took his paycheck and then left the building a little richer, but left an audience that was probably not entertained by the spectacle and whose pockets were a little less deeper.
